I was wondering if it is necessary to be employed throughout the NIW process. I might lose this job soon. Can someone clarify?

Ideally, yes you want to keep working in the same field, but your 140 or 485 isn't going to get rejected just because of a lay off. You can change jobs too btw. Hope it goes well!

It's better that you remain employed throughout the whole process. Also, you will want to remain in the same field of work just as George above said. If you change field, some immigration officers will doubt if you are well-positioned to advance the proposed endeavor.

Hey, you mentioned NIW, right? NIW is self petitioned and it is not absolutely necessary to be employed. But, when you start working again, you need to make sure that the position is in the field of your expertise.
