I need to go back to my home country to satisfy the 2-year residency requirement on my J1. Meanwhile, I am also considering applying for a green card. Since the wait time for NIW is pretty long, is there any expiration time for the NIW approval to be used? Simply put, will my approved I-140 remain valid after 2 years till I fulfill the home residency requirement ?

I have the same question too. I've heard someone said that you have to renew the I-140 or something. Is that true?

That is not true! You do not need to renew your I-140. An approved I-140 has no expiration date. An I-140, once approved will be valid indefinitely until it is revoked by the USCIS which is quiet rare or withdrawn by you. Also, there is no time limit for filing I-485 or IVP once I-140 has been approved.
