I'm wondering if the NTA policy would affect those who use the I-485/EAD combo card if anything goes wrong?

Yes, because if you use the I-485 EAD to work then your non-immigrant visa status will be invalidated. You can still stay in the US if your I-485 is still pending, but if your I-485 is denied, an NTA may be issued to you and you may be placed in removal proceedings.
