hi....I would like to know that if I worked for a few years in an industry irrelevant to my PhD major, and now plan to return to the field (and ideally get a offer in the field of my PhD degree), would the derail affect my case if I want to file under NIW?

Hey, I think it won't.

The key is to let the immigration officer know that you "intend" to stay in your field and you have had much achievements in that same field.

It depends. Have you been publishing works during that time? The trick is to claim a field that can incorporate all your work under. So if your PhD field can't cover your current endeavor, you can try find a broader field that covers them both.

Hello there! The idea is that the field of your expertise in which you have made notable achievements such as publications/ citations/ awards, etc will serve as the basis of your I-140 petition. As long as all your achievements is in one particular academic field, and you plan to continue working in the same field, the derail won't affect your case.
