Can I work in a different field that is not related to my PhD study?

Hi! I'm going to graduate soon and I'm thinking to look for jobs in the financial industry. The problem is that my PhD study and major is not quite related to finance (though I do have much experience in data mining and data analysis). Will this be a problem when I apply for a green card? Is it better for me to stick to the same field as my PhD?

Hey, it is better if you get a job in your PhD field.

Thanks for your response! How about after I get my GC? Do I still need to stay in the same field?

I don't think it matters after you get your green card

I Googled it for you and found some attorney suggested "if a respectable period of time (say 6 months or a year) has transpired" and you want to change career, this is ok.

Yea some say if you want to change from being a musician to a music producer, this is ok, but you if you want to change from a scientist to opening a restaurant, then this will not be fine.
